New-ish Sushi Paintings

My favorite sushi bar in Los Angeles is called Yoshi's in West Hollywood. I used to work at an ad agency in that hood and one day for lunch, a coworker and I went to check it out. Honestly, it didn't look like a great sushi bar– very cafeteria-esque and in a strip of shops on Santa Monica Blvd. I went in to check out the fish and man is the selection delectable. He has some very creative and tasty rolls and certain live sushi as well. I have my first sushi series hanging there now and have just put up my second specifically called Yoshi's Sushi Series. It consists of Yoshi's Red Dragon Roll, Octopus Nigiri, Mackerel Nigiri, and Yoshi's Sushi Bomb Roll. Noth Nigiri paintings have already been sold, but you can check out the series below:

I Had An Idea

I have started turning some of my drawings into paintings and have been trying to draw more in general. I have such a methodology to making my paintings that I almost feel like a little factory, which is fine because it's very relaxing and meditative.

Drawing throughout the day outside of the studio allows me to have small interludes of creative meditation, and I am seeming to like it.

This one's called Happiness Is A Warm Gun. It's the first painting I have done where I didn't know what I was painting before I started painting it. After layers and layers, I finally decided to finish it with an image of a gun. I took the image from an earlier drawing I did that is now hanging in my studio. A few of my latest pieces have been transformed from drawing to painting as opposed to coming from computer-generated images.

Effing Awesome

Meaningful hippie ravings of the great John Lennon are brought to life by John Raskin in I Met the Walrus, an animated short using the audio from an unofficial 1969 interview by a 14-year-old Beatles fan in Toronto. The school age interviewer, Jerry Levitan, asks questions regarding Lennon’s being barred from the US, the role of the youth in the revolution, and messages in the Beatles’ music. The innocence behind the questions and the sincerity with which Lennon responds evokes a humanity often forgotten as a trait of icons. The awesome animation interprets Levitan’s questions, Lennon’s words, and incorporates random noises in the room (phones ringing, etc). You really just have to see it to feel it. via Transbuddha

My Giant Tapeball

I use a shitload of tape to get the clean edges of my painting style. Although I am using it less and less each painting, it keeps getting bigger and bigger. I have had this ball going since the second year I started painting in this style....since in 2004. The diameter as of today is 24 inches!

House Tour: Color in Los Angeles

Here is a brief tour of some of my artwork in our 2-bedroom 1000 sq. foot Culver City Casa in Los Angeles, California. (Click on any of the images for more detail.)

Once in the front door, you are greeted with a triptych and a sculpture. The paintings are called Carp and Lily and are inspired by Japanese woodcuts. The Venus fly trap sculpture is by NYC artist and Hunter MFA grad, Johnston Foster.

We found some great pillows from Crate and Barrel that really compliment the color schemes going on here. I don't think they sell them anymore, but they have some other cool ones here.

An Arco-style lamp we purchased from ModSage.com arches over our living room and gives us great low-light in the evenings.

The living room opens up towards the dining room where we have the only wall that can house the 6 foot painting of Madonna and her son Lourdes called Like A Virgin and Child. This painting intertwines a few themes including Rafael's original Madonna and Child composition with the story of Madonna and the children's book she wrote with Kabbalah undertones.

Our dining room table is the Spanna Table with Kyoto Chairs from Design Within Reach. The table looks great and the way it expands is really smart. And the Kyoto Chairs are surprisingly comfortable for being just made from hard wood.

To the right of the dining room we have an interesting corner. We have filled it up with a painting from a series I did for a show at a salon/gallery in Hollywood called Chop Chop. The piece is the first piece of the series and the only one that hasn't sold yet.

Below is a sculpture by the NYC artist/musician Matt Terrell. Most people think it's a caterpillar of some sort and I am fond of it because it reminds me of the sculpture from Beetlejuice.

To the left in the dining room, you can catch a piece I did referencing Andy Warhol's Self Portrait.

As we move towards the bedrooms, we have something we call the hall square. It's not a hallway, so we don't call it one. We seem to like to fill any chance of empty floor space with modern sculptures. Here we have two pieces I did called Sitting Fawns. I am fascinated with people's fascinations with lawn ornaments. So I have painted some and placed them in our hall square.

Last stop on the tour is the master bedroom. The 6ft. painting to the right is a portrait of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. I think these two celebs are very interesting human beings and when broken down to simple shapes, they still make an aesthetically pleasing composition.

The painting on the adjoining wall is Issue Sixteen from my Afro Series.

The bedroom set here comes from a great find for modern furniture in Los Angeles. And for reasonable prices too. Check out Blueprint Furniture on Beverly Blvd. They don't have all their stuff online, so it's best to head down to the showroom. Along with the bedroom set, we also grabbed our office desk and coffee table from here.

Julie and I absolutely love our duvet cover from Amenity Home. It's just so simple and pleasing to the eye...

Hello? Luck?

On the way to work this morning, I noticed a ladybug crawling up the driverside window. I thought, "Wow- I will have luck riding with me all the way to work." A few minutes down the road and I thought that it would be good to let the ladybug go free and maybe more luck would come my way. I tried grabbing the little guy with my fingers and I felt too much like King Kong clumsily grabbing Naomi Watts. I was also trying to concentrate on driving so I decided to roll down the window and let it out instead. As I pushed the button down I realized that it was stuck on Auto-Roll down and my luck ended up getting smashed into the window and down into the door.

It immediately reminded me of the time I bought sticky mouse traps to fix a little rodent problem in the house. I set up the traps and caught a few mice. I would then put them in plastic bags and throw them away. The weird thing about it was that you were throwing away a living mouse as opposed to a dead one. My friend Dan was in town at the time and he said he would like to try and set the mouse free next time we caught one. So we catch one and he takes it outside to the street. He seemed to be out there for a good 20 minutes and when he came back he was in utter shock.

He said he tried using his fingers to get the mouse off, but the glue kept getting on his hands and he couldn't release the mouse. He then tried using a stick and he just couldn't get the mouse to budge. Finally, he decided to shake the trap and the mouse started to come off. He shook harder and harder and then finally. Bam! The mouse flew off the trap and onto the street. He did it. He was so proud that he got the mouse off, only to walk over and see that it died on impact. Wha-whaaaaaaa.

Duck Pin Bowling

Julie and I went duck pin bowling the other night. The lanes were darkened, so it was kinda romantic. I had never been duck pin bowling before but it seemed very normal until I looked down the lanes. There seemed to only be one duck pin sitting at the end of each lane. I looked back at Julie and she was smiling. Due to the lighting, I couldn't tell if it was a mischievous smile or a ha ha smile. I motion to her with my arm that she could go first. As she wound up to throw her ball I reached down to grab mine in the ball return between lanes and out of the corner of my eye watched her throw her ball. It was strange that once her ball hit the lane it did not make noise, nor did it make noise as it slide down the lane and struck the duck pin squarely.

Julie's strike happened so fast, just as I was reaching down to pick up my ball. My fingers dug deep into the ball and the sensation was not what I expected at all. I felt soft. And I felt furry. My fingers immediately started to sweat as I gazed down at what I was holding. It seemed that these balls were not normal bowling balls at all, but stuffed animal-like bowling balls. It really reminded me of Popples- these little stuffed animals that turned into balls that I played with when I was a kid.

I accepted this turn of events and took my stoic bowling pose. I felt good in my bowling motion and the release was perfect. The Popple left my hand in what I though was for sure a perfect strike. Up in the air it flew and down onto the slick lane, only to land just right of the duck pin. Damn! I yelled as I looked down the lane to see the fringe of the Popple's artificial hair literally touching the duck pin. I shrugged my shoulders in disappointment and accepted the fact that my wife always beats me in bowling, even with a stuffed animal bowling ball. The lights dim until the bowling alley goes completely dark and silent.

White Paper Helicopter Ride

I stepped into a helicopter made of paper with my friend Brian. It was an interesting experience because I had never flown in a helicopter before, especially one made out of paper. The blades of the white paper helicopter where silent, which was pretty cool because no one on the ground, 50 feet below us, could hear us coming. It felt like we were sitting in a hammock, swinging back and forth high above the air. The paper gave way to our weight slightly and as I was flying my confidence that we will stay up was lacking slightly due to the papers forgiveness.

I told Brian that my parents wanted to see us in the paper helicopter and that we should fly by them and say hi. They were sunbathing out at Two Rivers Golf Course where the Chickahominy River meets the James River in Eastern Virginia. We floated through the 16th hole and we were at such a beautiful height to view the golf course. Fifty feet high was perfect. The morning sun bathed the round mounds and glistened off the morning dew. As we approached the 16th green, we could see my parents sunbathing on the beach by the river. There were a few other people trying to catch a nice Virginia summertime tan. We circled above in silence until I yelled "Mom! Mom!" and she didn't hear me for some reason, though I felt like we were disturbing the other golden sunbathers. I finally decided to drop my green flip flop on her to get her attention. Out the paper helicopter it went and landed in the sand next to her. No response. I took my flip flop off the other foot and threw it down, this time hitting my dad, who grumpily woke up and nudged my mother. They saw us now and sat up. "Hope you're having fun up there!" she yelled up at us as they were both waving.

Brian says "I need a drink. They have a bar around here?"
I said, "Hell yea. It's right next to the helipad by the clubhouse."

We floated to the right, across the short par 3 17th hole and through the woods over the cart path. We took a right and went in between he pool and the clubhouse to the parking lot where this giant white cylinder stood. On top you could see some commotion along with the flashing lights of the tower. We fly over to land but there seems to be an incoming craft, so we have to hover about 10 feet to the right of the helipad.

There were about 20 soldiers in black with their hi-tech rifles and helmets with infrared goggles. They were all pointing up at this being who was strapped to the top of this craft. The craft was black and looked like a half-rocket in length, but instead of taking off, the rocket was landing. The being, who seemed to be in a metal spacesiut attached to the top of this half-rocket was controlling the amount of propulsion that was coming out of the bottom of the rocket. Brian's eyes were wide open and he mouthed to me "What The Fuuuuuuck".

The being managed to land the craft. The front of his suit folded down into itself and revealed this slimy green human like being. It had small round eyes and it looked like it had dreads, though the dreads where not made of hair, but they were darker brown and slimy just like it's skin. It looked down at the soldiers in black as all their guns whizzed and clicked on, pointing at the being. The being opened the slit in his face where his mouth should be a let out a high pitch sound. It hurt my ears more than anything, so I decided to stop hovering and land in the parking lot. As we went down quickly, Brian covering his ears, we crash landed the paper white helicopter and stood up. During the crash landing, it seemed so fast, but the soldiers had blasted away the being and all that was left were chunks of green fleshy slime.

Brain and I turned from the scene smelling like burnt paper and trying to wipe the green slime off of us as we walk into the clubhouse to finally get our beer.
